Use the following check list to note where the security of your home could be modified and upgraded:

Do keep your garage and shed locked as they may provide criminals with the tools to break and enter |

Do install a visible security bar on sliding patio doors, and remove handles from casement windows |

Do ensure sliding patio doors cannot be lifted up and out by installing screw nails in the upper track |

Do protect all basement windows with theft deterrent security bars or a decorative security grill |
| |
Do install a timer on a bathroom light during extended absences, as revealed by a former burglar |

Do cancel deliveries before your departure on holidays and resume only after your actual return |
| |
Do ensure your second-storey windows cannot be reached by a burglar using trees or antennas |

Do adjust the volume of your telephone so the ring cannot be heard outside your home |

Do record serial numbers and identifying marks of valuable and theft-prone items |
| |
Do place a large dog bowl outside doorways, which suggests a large dog inside |

Do remove home key from your set when car keys are left at garage or at a parking lot |

Do post signs and decals at all entrances of home, as they tend to deter some burglars |

Do set up adequate lighting both in and outside the home by using automatic light timers |

Do install timers on radio/sound systems and TV to create usual sounds inside your home |

Do a permanent video tape of your home and contents, updating once a year. Store elsewhere |

Do arrange to have lawn cut and driveway plowed while you are absent for an extended period. |

Don't hide keys in mailbox or under the mat and do not have any open identification on key rings |

Don't broadcast particulars of your absence on a telephone answering machine |

Don't hide all your valuables in one location, but rather spread them throughout the home |

Don't start to get careless about not locking doors simply because of a recently installed alarm system |

Don't get caught between a burglar and his exit. If you do encounter one, get out .......... and quickly |
